Derek Harland Ward was a New Zealand flying ace in the Royal Air Force during World War II. Born in Whangārei, he joined the Royal New Zealand Air Force in 1937 and flew Hawker Hurricane fighters. Ward was credited with shooting down six German aircraft and commanded No. 73 Squadron in Egypt. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and a bar to the DFC. His service included participation in the Battle of Britain and the North African campaign. Tragically, he was killed in action by German ace Hans-Joachim Marseille on 17 June 1942.
