Derek Lewis is a former Director General of HM Prison Service, born on July 9, 1946. He was dismissed in 1995 by Home Secretary Michael Howard following a series of high-profile prisoner escapes. Lewis faced criticism for not suspending the governor of Parkhurst Prison after a mass escape and had alleged that Howard threatened to overrule him. This claim was highlighted during the 1997 Conservative Leadership contest when Howard failed to clearly address the issue despite being asked multiple times. Lewis studied at Queens' College, Cambridge from 1964 to 1967.
