He was a victim of the terror campaign during the Argentine dictatorship led by Videla, resulting in his murder. Botto was married to actress Cristina Rota, and they had two children, María and Juan Diego Botto, who both became actors. Additionally, he was the uncle of actor Alejandro Botto. His life and career were tragically cut short due to the political violence of the time.
