Diether H. Haenicke was an influential academic leader, serving as president of Western Michigan University from 1985 to 1998 and again as interim president from 2006 to 2007. He earned his doctorate from the University of Munich in 1962. Even after stepping down as president in 1998, he continued to teach foreign languages until 2004. A notable event in his later years was being appointed interim president in 2006. Tragically, he suffered cardiac arrest in December 2008 and passed away on February 15, 2009, due to complications in Kalamazoo, Michigan.
