Dwijendra Kumar Ray-Chaudhuri, born on November 1, 1933, is a distinguished professor emeritus at Ohio State University. He solved the Kirkman's schoolgirl problem in 1968 alongside his student R. M. Wilson, contributing significantly to design theory. He earned a master's degree in mathematics from Rajabazar Science College, University of Calcutta (1956) and a Ph.D. in combinatorics from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (1959). Ray-Chaudhuri has held various academic positions and is known for his work in design theory and error-correcting codes, notably the BCH codes.
