He was the president and CEO of The Center for the National Interest from 1994 to 2022, a position he was chosen for by former President Richard Nixon. Simes served as an informal foreign policy advisor to Nixon, traveling frequently to Russia, other former Soviet states, and various regions in Western and Central Europe.
