His research primarily focuses on testing the general theory of relativity across various astrophysical and cosmological scales. He also explores different facets of neutron star and black hole astrophysics, as well as the properties of magnetohydrodynamic turbulence. Psaltis is a founding member of the Event Horizon Telescope, an international mm-VLBI experiment that captured the first image of a black hole, where he served as Project Scientist from 2016 to 2019.
