He was the brother of actor and director Kostis Michailidis, with whom he taught theater. After his family emigrated to Greece as a child, he studied at the Varvakeio School and graduated from the Law School at the University of Athens, while also attending various music conservatories. He worked as the chief conductor at the National Opera for 44 years and composed numerous works across different music genres.
