He currently works at the Hellenic Maritime History Institute and teaches Modern Greek History at the People's University in Athens. He proposes that Homer's Odyssey took place in the Atlantic, identifying the island of Aeolus as one of the Balearic Islands. Michalopoulos has held various academic positions in Greece and was a Fulbright Scholar in 1984.
