He graduated from Babruisk Woodworking Technical School in 1972, becoming a novice at the Holy Trinity-St. Sergius Lavra in 1977. He completed his theological education at the Moscow Spiritual Seminary in 1978 and at the Moscow Spiritual Academy in 1982. Ordained a hierodeacon in 1978 and a hieromonk in 1984, he held various ecclesiastical positions, including being consecrated as an archbishop on February 19, 1999.
