Dionisio Txoperena Altamira, known as Dio, was a Basque shepherd who emigrated from Goizueta, Navarra to the United States in 1973. He settled in Tomales, California, where he had a small farm. Txoperena gained fame in the early 2000s as the face of a successful advertising campaign for AT&T, portraying a shepherd. His work included 13 commercials aired from 2001. Txoperena became a prominent figure in the Basque-American community and symbolized the Basque sheepherders in the U.S. He passed away in September 2006, shortly before his wife gave birth to twins.
