Dizu Plaatjies, born on February 5, 1959, in Lusikisiki, South Africa, is a renowned Xhosa musician, known as the founder of the group Amampondo. A graduate from the University of Cape Town, he also teaches African Music there. His group gained international fame in the 1980s and performed at Wembley Stadium for Nelson Mandela's tribute. After forming a new ensemble called Ibuyambo, he continues to share his passion for African percussion, having won multiple SAMA Awards for his recent works.
