He became widely known due to a corruption scandal in September 2016, when he was accused of corruption and abuse of power while serving as acting head of a department in the Ministry of Internal Affairs. Following his arrest, he was sentenced to 13 years in prison in June 2019, later reduced to 12 years and 6 months. He also faced substantial fines and the loss of his state honors.
