Don Benjamin Rupasinghe Gunawardena, commonly known as Robert Gunawardena, was a prominent Sri Lankan Marxist politician and diplomat born on March 12, 1904, and passed away on December 26, 1971. He co-founded the Lanka Sama Samaja Party, Sri Lanka's first political party, and represented Kotte as a long-serving Member of Parliament. Additionally, he led the Suriya-Mal Movement and held the position of ambassador to China from 1965 to 1970, significantly influencing Sri Lankan politics during his lifetime.
