His case involved a wildlife sanctuary he co-owned with his second wife Carole Baskin. Although no evidence of a crime was found, those close to him believed he did not disappear willingly as he had ongoing business ventures. He had substantial assets, totaling over $5 million, and was declared legally dead in 2002, five years after going missing. His disappearance received media attention through the series Tiger King.
