Donald Ray Scifres is an American electrical engineer and entrepreneur born on September 10, 1946, in Lafayette, Indiana. He studied at Purdue University and the University of Illinois, earning his bachelor’s, master’s, and doctorate. He worked at Xerox PARC and co-developed the Distributed Feedback Semiconductor Laser. In 1983, he co-founded Spectra Diode Laboratories, which became a leading manufacturer of fiber optic components. Scifres has over 130 patents and has received multiple awards including the George E. Pake Prize and the Arthur L. Schawlow Award, and is a respected member of various engineering societies.
