From 1959 to 1997, he served as an English literature professor at the University of Nebraska at Kearney, where he notably held an endowed chair in English, Poetry, and Creative Writing. Welch was honored with a bronze sculpture dedicated to him on campus in June 2001. He passed away on August 6, 2016.
