He earned his degrees from the University of Chicago and worked at several universities, becoming a Distinguished Professor at Virginia Tech. Bloss patented the Bloss Automated Refractometer, which determines the curvature of a laser beam in crystals for mineral identification. He also published extensively and contributed significantly to the field of mineralogy, including serving as president of the Mineralogical Society of America.
