Donald R. Hamann is an American experimental physicist, known for his work in surface physics. He studied electrical engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, earning his bachelor's degree in 1961 and a PhD in electrical engineering in 1965. Hamann worked at the Ford Motor Company in 1964/65 and was employed at Bell Laboratories from 1965, leading the theoretical department from 1978 to 1981 and the surface physics department thereafter. He served as a visiting professor at Rutgers University and received the Davisson-Germer Award in 1979 for his pioneering work on semiconductor surface electronic structure.
