Born in East Cleveland, Ohio, he earned his bachelor's degree from Oberlin College in 1936, a master's degree in Mathematics from Princeton University in 1939, and a Ph.D. in Mathematics from Ohio State University in 1948. He served in the Navy from 1942 to 1945. Whitney's contributions to statistics have had a lasting impact on the field.
