Donald S. Fredrickson was an American physiologist known for first describing Tangier disease in 1961. He served as the director of the National Institutes of Health from 1975 to 1981. Fredrickson was elected to the National Academy of Sciences in 1973 and to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1975. He received the Gairdner Foundation International Award in 1978 and became a member of the American Philosophical Society in 1985. His work led to the classification of primary hyperlipoproteinemias being named after him.
