After studying land rights and the impact on rural violence, she moved to Colombia in the 1990s for development work. Meertens has held significant roles in various UN agencies and was the research coordinator for the National Commission for Reparation and Reconciliation. Her academic focus includes rural displacement, gender inequalities, and the connections between land issues and violence.
