She was born into a musical family in New York on November 27, 1923. After winning a talent contest, she became a professional singer at 34, raising six children as a single mother. Hines toured extensively, performing with renowned artists and entertaining troops. Before her death from heart failure on August 14, 2015, she worked on an autobiography, leaving a legacy of her contributions to music.
