He gained recognition for his actions during World War II, particularly for his bravery during the attack on Pearl Harbor. Despite being a mess attendant, he operated a machine gun and served valiantly, which earned him the Navy Cross. Miller died on November 24, 1943, during the Battle of Tarawa in the Gilbert Islands.
