Dorothy Edith Smith (July 6, 1926 - June 3, 2022) was a Canadian ethnographer, British-born scholar, and a prominent figure in feminist studies and sociology. She was recognized with the Order of Canada for her extensive contributions to various research fields, including women's studies, feminist theory, psychology, and educational studies, as well as subfields of sociology such as the sociology of knowledge, family studies, and methodology. Smith is known for founding the sociological subfields of feminist standpoint theory and institutional ethnography.
