Dorothy Lavinia Brown (January 7, 1914 - June 13, 2004), also known as 'Dr. D.', was an African American surgeon, legislator, and educator. She was the first African American female surgeon in the Southeastern United States and also the first African American woman to serve in the Tennessee General Assembly, where she was elected to the Tennessee House of Representatives. During her time in office, Brown advocated for women's abortion rights and the civil rights of people of color.
