Dorothy McEwen Kildall (1943-2005) was a pioneer in Silicon Valley, co-founding Digital Research with her husband Gary Kildall in 1974. She played a vital role in marketing their innovative operating system CP/M, which became the first widely used operating system for personal computers. Despite negotiations with IBM for a licensing deal, she opted to protect her interests legally, resulting in the eventual creation of MS-DOS by Microsoft. After her divorce in 1983, she shifted her focus to animal restoration and philanthropy until her death from brain cancer in 2005.
