She became famous for making and selling root beer to thousands of canoeists, gaining national attention. Living on Knife Lake since 1934, her life was significantly affected by the area's transformation into the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. Over her lifetime, she welcomed around 6,000 - 7,000 visitors annually until her passing in 1986, becoming the last full-time resident of the BWCAW.
