She initially aimed to study languages and history but shifted focus to chemistry under the influence of her chemistry teacher. Nightingale earned her Bachelor's in 1922 and Master's in Chemistry in 1923. She became a professor at the University of Missouri, conducting research in organic chemistry, including chemoluminescence and Friedel-Crafts reactions, which had applications in synthetic rubber and fuel production. She received the Garvan-Olin Medal in 1959.
