He served as the long-time director and scientific advisor of the Institute for Serbian Language of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts (SANU). His contributions to linguistics and his leadership in the institute significantly impacted the study and preservation of the Serbian language. He passed away on June 18, 2010, in Belgrade.
