Since 2004, he has served as a member of the Sri Lankan Parliament representing the Gampaha District. Wijesekera held the position of Deputy Minister of Disaster Management until he was removed by President Maithripala Sirisena on 2017-10-29. Following this, he attempted to cross over to the opposition, a move that was deemed invalid due to the parliamentary meeting's classification.
