He graduated from Gymnasium Kranj in 1951 and studied physics at the University of Ljubljana. After earning his doctorate at UCLA, he worked at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory until retirement in 2012. He was known for being an Ambassador of the Sun and an honorary member of the Slovenian Engineering Academy, also frequently visiting Slovenia to lecture.
