He achieved the rank of brigadier general and had a distinguished career as a fighter pilot in the United States Air Force. During the Vietnam War, he completed 285 combat missions flying F-105 Thunderchiefs and F-4 Phantoms, and he is credited with one enemy aircraft destroyed in aerial combat. Cherry concluded his military service in 1988 after 29 years in the Air Force.
