Wilmer Earl Gallaher was an American naval officer and pilot born on May 9, 1907, in Wilmington. He commanded the VS-6 dive bomber squadron aboard the USS Enterprise during the Battle of Midway, leading an attack on the Japanese aircraft carrier Kaga. Gallaher served in various operations throughout World War II, including the Philippines and Okinawa campaigns. He earned the Navy Cross for his actions at Midway and the Legion of Merit for his service in the Korean War. He retired as a Rear Admiral in 1959 and passed away on February 4, 1983.
