He lived in New York City from the 1940s onwards, collaborating with notable musicians including George Shearing and Jack Teagarden. In the subsequent decade, he accompanied several artists like Benny Goodman and Tommy Dorsey. Shaughnessy gained prominence in the 1960s playing with Count Basie and later had a long-term association with Johnny Carson on The Tonight Show. His wife was the singer and actress Ilene Woods.
