Edda Neele (1910-2005) was a German psychiatrist and significant figure in psychiatry. A student of Karl Kleist, she played a key role in popularizing the terms unipolar and bipolar disorders. Her Habilitation dissertation in 1949, focusing on cyclical psychoses, was pivotal in the introduction of these terms in psychiatry. She was the first woman to achieve a Habilitation in psychiatry in Germany and maintained a private practice until 1986. Active in politics, she was involved in the Confessing Church during the Nazi era and later joined the Christian Democratic Union.
