Eddie Mabo (29 June 1936 – 21 January 1992) was an Australian Torres Strait Islander who was a key figure in the land rights movement. He is most renowned for his role in a landmark decision by the High Court of Australia that overturned the legal doctrine of 'terra nullius' (land belonging to no one), which had previously dictated Australian land law. After two legal battles, the High Court ruled in favor of Mabo and others on 3 June 1992, though he sadly passed away from cancer just months prior. His legacy led to the 1993 federal legislation on Indigenous land rights.
