He began his career in print journalism with De Tijd and debuted in broadcasting in the 1970s. Notably, he worked for Studio Sport from 1981 to 2003, covering various sports events, particularly football. Poelmann commented on important matches, including the UEFA Champions League final in 1999. His commentary style included memorable phrases, and he also provided voices for video games. Louis van Gaal praised him as the best football commentator in the Netherlands.
