Edgar Frederick Riek was an Australian zoologist and paleontologist, born on May 1, 1920, in New Zealand and passed away on February 9, 2016, in Canberra. He grew up on a farm in Queensland and studied geology and zoology at the University of Queensland while working as a lab assistant. He specialized in freshwater crustaceans, describing numerous new species. Riek worked as an entomologist for CSIRO from 1945 until 1978 and described the fossil insect Choristotanyderus nanus. He received an honorary doctorate in 1971 and an Order of Australia Medal in 1996.
