Édgar Morales Pérez was the mayor-elect of Matehuala, San Luis Potosí, Mexico, elected on July 1, 2012, as a member of the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) and the Ecologist Green Party of Mexico (PVEM). He was murdered on August 12, 2012, along with his campaign manager while returning from a birthday party. This occurred during a period of escalating violence in the region, which was attributed to the criminal group Los Zetas. Morales Pérez was to assume office in September 2012.
