He transitioned from a career in classical ballet, where he was the principal dancer at the Teatro Municipal do Rio de Janeiro, to painting, studying under Oswaldo Teixeira. Known for his landscapes, especially inspired by rural Minas Gerais, he also gained recognition as a portraitist and cultural observer. Simmons worked in various countries including England, Italy, France, and Australia before passing away on May 14, 1994.
