Edmond Jabès (1912 - January 2, 1991) was a French poet and writer of Egyptian-Jewish descent. Born and raised in Cairo, he came from a bourgeois banking family. Jabès migrated to France in 1957 due to political turmoil and nationalization of their bank, as well as the impact of the Suez Crisis on the Jewish minority in Egypt. A national liberal, he founded a bilingual magazine and a cultural association, advocating against Zionism while also making significant contributions to literature and culture in both Egypt and France.
