A graduate of the University of Arkansas, Parkes rose through the ranks of United Gas, eventually holding key leadership roles, including as president of its subsidiary companies. He was a well-respected figure in the gas industry, having also served as president of the American Gas Association. Parkes was born in Alabama and had familial ties to notable historical figures.
