Eduard Stapel was a prominent figure in the church gay movement in East Germany (DDR) and served as the spokesperson for the Lesbian and Gay Federation in Germany (LSVD) from 1990 to 2006. A journalist and theologian, he lived in Leipzig and was involved in the church opposition movement during the DDR era. He was one of the founders and main conceptualizers of the LSVD, which was established in February 1990 in Leipzig under the name SVD.
