He obtained his degree in Vertebrate Paleontology from the National University of La Plata in 1969 and earned a PhD in Natural Sciences in 1973. Tonni is known for his pioneering work in Quaternary paleontology in Latin America, studying Cenozoic birds, archaeological paleontology, paleoclimatology, and biostratigraphy. In the 1970s, he conducted initial studies on vertebrate fauna adjacent to archaeological sites, focusing on climate and environment in the Buenos Aires province.
