Born in Panama Canal Zone, he graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1940 and served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. After the war, he contributed to high-speed rocket sled experiments and worked on various aircraft safety systems, including the Apollo project and the Apache helicopter.
