Edward B. Garvey (1914-1999) was an American hiker and conservationist best known for his thru-hike of the Appalachian Trail in 1970. His book, 'Appalachian Hiker', published in 1971, significantly raised awareness of the thru-hiking sport. He served as an auditor for the Soil Conservation Service and was CFO for the National Science Foundation, retiring in 1969. Garvey was actively involved in trail maintenance and legislation efforts, receiving the American Land Hero Award in 1996 and induction into the Appalachian Trail Hall of Fame in 2011.
