Edward Colquhoun Charlton VC was an English guardsman in the Irish Guards during World War II. He was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross for his gallantry during an attack in Wistedt, Germany, on 21 April 1945. Despite severe injuries, Charlton bravely manned a machine gun, facing enemy fire to protect his infantry comrades, allowing them to escape. His selfless actions resulted in heavy casualties for the enemy but led to his own death from wounds sustained during the fight. His Victoria Cross is on display at the Guards Regimental Headquarters in London.
