Edward M. Walsh, born in 1939, is the founding president of the University of Limerick, established in 1989. He played a vital role in its development from the National Institute for Higher Education Limerick in 1970 and led the transition to university status. Walsh served as president until his retirement in 1998, being honored with the title of 'Founding President' for life. He is a native of Cork city and a chartered engineer as well as a registered silversmith.
