Edward Balchowsky was an American poet, artist, musician, and composer born in Frankfort on February 16, 1916. He served in the Lincoln Battalion during the Spanish Civil War, where he sadly lost a hand. Despite this, he became a significant figure in Chicago's artistic scene. His life and work inspired four singer-songwriters, including Jimmy Buffett, Loudon Wainwright III, Utah Phillips, and Dion Dimucci. Balchowsky's contributions to music and the arts left a lasting legacy until his death in Chicago on November 27, 1989.
